Why industrial teams choose Hixson for MEP engineering
One team for every building system
Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, structural and civil engineers sit in-house, so your systems are coordinated instead of stitched together.
Designed around your process
HVAC, power and piping are sized to support real process loads, sanitary requirements and utility demand, not generic assumptions.
Compliance built into the design
Hazardous area classification, arc flash studies, NFPA 70E, fire protection and cGMP requirements are handled during design rather than as a retrofit.
Experienced discipline leaders
Department managers with decades of plant, lab and cGMP experience lead the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection teams.
Support past the drawings
Project management, cost estimating and construction administration are in-house, through construction and system start-up.
Proven with major manufacturers
Hixson has engineered facilities for clients such as Nestle, Abbott Nutrition, Maple Leaf Foods and Molson Coors.
What our mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering covers
Hixson's Building Systems Engineering teams provide integrated mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, structural and civil engineering. The work spans new construction, building utility upgrades, utility capacity analyses and process line additions.
Because all disciplines are in-house, your HVAC, power and piping designs are coordinated with the architecture and the process design from the start. That applies to food and beverage plants, pharma and biotech cGMP space, laboratories and workplace projects.
- HVAC system design, process and sanitary piping, and mechanical utilities
- High, medium and low voltage power distribution, lighting, telecom and fire alarm
- Hazardous area classification, protective relaying, arc flash and harmonics analysis
- Domestic water, process water, hot water production, high pressure rinse water
- Compressed air, natural gas, sanitary and process drainage, central sanitation systems
- Fire pumps, fire sprinkler systems and fire protection engineering
- Structural engineering for industrial and process loading, plus site and civil work
- Utility capacity analyses and upgrades for existing plants and process line additions
Backed by 75+ years of plant and lab engineering
“Driving every facility design decision we made (with Hixson) was the question: How can we produce safe, high-quality products while operating the plant more efficiently and smarter?”
“This project (designed and engineered by Hixson) is big for our company’s growth because it will more than double our capacity when it is fully ramped to scale.”
“(Together with Hixson,) we were able to figure out a way to not only keep this brewery going, but make it a world-class brewery in terms of quality and efficiencies.”

We outline the disciplines involved, the deliverables and the services we recommend for your project.
Frequently asked questions
Do you provide MEP engineering on its own or only with architecture?
Building systems engineering is one of Hixson's 20 in-house disciplines. It can be part of a full architecture and engineering project or a focused building systems scope. Tell us your scope and we will confirm the best fit.
What types of facilities do you design MEP systems for?
Food and beverage plants, pharma and biotech cGMP facilities, laboratories and R&D space, and corporate workplace projects. We do not design residential, healthcare, retail, restaurant or hospitality buildings.
Where do you work?
Hixson serves clients across North America, including the United States and Canada, from our office at 659 Van Meter Street in Cincinnati, Ohio.
How is pricing set?
Every project is scoped individually, so fees depend on facility type, the disciplines involved and the level of design and construction support you need. Send your details and we will put a scope and fee proposal together.
Do you build the systems you design?
No. Hixson provides design and construction administration, not general contracting or construction labor. We stay involved through construction, start-up and commissioning support.
Can you work on an existing plant instead of a new building?
Yes. Our teams handle building utility upgrades, utility capacity analyses, process line additions, retrofits and renovations, as well as new construction.
Ready to scope your MEP design?
